Dear Friends of AYUDA,
I am excited to share with you some life-changing personal stories from an exceptional team of AYUDA volunteers from AYUDA's 2016 Dominican Republic Volunteer Programs. AYUDA volunteers recently returned from the Dominican Republic after spending the past six months preparing for service and then spending part of their summer working with AYUDA's local partners in the DR to empower youth with diabetes to live happier and healthier lives.
During AYUDA's Campo Amigo Dominicano Volunteer Program, volunteers worked closely with young leaders from local partner organization Aprendiendo A Vivir to design engaging, educational, and empowering activities for two weekends of educational outreach programs. During the first weekend, campers and their families participated in Día de la Familia, a day-long program focused on empowerment and community building within members of the foundation. The second weekend saw the 9th annual Campo Amigo educational diabetes camp. This camp was oriented toward newly diagnosed and more at-risk children with diabetes. AYUDA volunteers led educational activities for their groups to provide campers with the knowledge and empowerment to live happier and healthier lives with diabetes. During these two programs, AYUDA volunteers served over 150 youth living with type 1 diabetes and their families.
This summer also saw the launch of AYUDA's En El Camino Volunteer Program! During this ten day pilot program, AYUDA volunteers worked alongside Dominican youth volunteers from our local partner organization Aprendiendo A Vivir to plan and lead educational outreach workshops in diabetes communities across the country. Volunteers visited five different provinces and reached upwards of 200 people living with diabetes; helping to strengthen the sustainability of individual diabetes communities as well as the connection between Aprendiendo A Vivir and communities in the surrounding provinces.
You can read volunteers' individual stories from this summer by visiting our AYUDA Volunteer Blogs page on our website.
As we finish evaluating and debriefing from our summer programs, I want to thank you again for your support of AYUDA, our volunteers, and the youth we serve in the Dominican Republic. We are looking forward to continuing this work into the new year and to another summer of educational and empowering diabetes programs!
Juntos somos más Fuertes! Together we are Stronger!
Nick
