In recent years, there has been a global movement for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. However, women and girls in various parts of the world, including India, still face discrimination and obstacles that hinder their access to opportunities.
In India, menstrual equity is a significant concern, affecting women and girls' empowerment. Approximately 23% of adolescent girls drop out of school due to a lack of menstrual hygiene facilities and awareness. Additionally, only about 36% of menstruating women have access to sanitary pads.
The Desai Foundation is actively addressing these challenges through programs that provide support and resources. We focus on comprehensive health and hygiene, emphasizing menstrual health education and access to sanitary products.
Furthermore, we offer livelihood opportunities for women, including vocational and entrepreneurial training, to enhance their economic independence and contribution to society.
Vocational training plays a crucial role in addressing the unique challenges faced by rural communities in India. In these areas, limited access to quality education and formal employment opportunities often leaves women and youth with few options for economic advancement. Vocational training programs provide a lifeline by equipping individuals with practical skills that are not only in demand but also tailored to the local context. These programs empower rural residents to become self-reliant and bridge the urban-rural divide, reducing migration to cities in search of work. Moreover, vocational training fosters entrepreneurship, allowing individuals to harness their newfound skills to create small businesses that contribute to local economic development. By bringing vocational training to rural India, we can unlock the untapped potential of these communities and help them thrive.
During July and August:
1. We trained 636 women as sales representatives to promote Asani sanitary napkins, empowering them and advancing menstrual health awareness.
2. We reached 1,021 individuals through gynecology health camps, providing essential healthcare services.
3. Our menstrual hygiene awareness camps reached 146,960 women and girls, challenging stigma and promoting positive attitudes.
4. With your support, we distributed 53,556 free Asani sanitary napkins, removing barriers to education and productivity.
5. Through vocational training, we impacted 293 individuals in sewing classes, 151 in beauty parlor training, and 319 in computer skills, enhancing employability.
6. Our Career Guidance Program benefited 1,648 individuals, and 168 participants in Entrepreneur Development Training contributed to women's empowerment across communities.
