Empowering Women in India at Every Stage of Life

By Amber Toth | Grant Writer

Gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls have become pivotal components of a substantial worldwide movement, acknowledging the progress made in recent years. However, it is crucial to recognize that women and girls in various parts of the world, including India, still confront discrimination and obstacles that hinder their access to livelihood opportunities and limit their contributions to society.

In India, menstrual equity remains a critical issue affecting women and girls' overall empowerment and well-being. According to recent statistics, a significant percentage of Indian women face challenges related to menstrual health. Around 23% of adolescent girls in India drop out of school after reaching puberty due to the lack of menstrual hygiene facilities and awareness (UNICEF). Additionally, only about 36% of menstruating women in India have access to sanitary pads, while the majority resort to using unhygienic alternatives.

The Desai Foundation is at the forefront of efforts to address these challenges and empower women and girls at every stage of life in India. Through various programs, we provide crucial support and resources. These initiatives encompass health and hygiene programs, with a special focus on menstrual health education and support. By imparting knowledge about menstrual hygiene management and making sanitary products accessible, we strive to break the barriers that hinder women's progress.

The Desai Foundation also offers livelihood opportunities for women, ranging from employment opportunities to entrepreneurial and vocational skills training. Equipping women with the necessary skills and resources enables them to enhance their economic independence and contribute actively to society's growth.

Over the past two months (May & June), your contributions have led to transformative changes in the lives of women and girls across our targeted communities.

Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods:

Your support has enabled us to train 485 women as sales representatives, creating income-generating opportunities and empowering them to be agents of change in their communities. By selling and distributing Asani sanitary napkins, these women not only support their families but also play a crucial role in promoting menstrual health awareness.

Ensuring Access to Healthcare:

We reached 260 individuals through gynecology health camps, providing essential health services and screenings. These camps have been instrumental in the early detection and prevention of health issues, thus safeguarding the well-being of women.

Promoting Menstrual Hygiene Awareness:

Our menstrual hygiene awareness camps over the last two months reached 35,456 women and girls. We are fostering positive attitudes and behaviors toward menstrual health by providing essential knowledge and challenging the stigma surrounding menstruation.

With your support, we distributed 18,177 Asani sanitary napkins, ensuring women and girls have access to hygienic and affordable menstrual products. The distribution of these pads has contributed to breaking the barriers that hinder women's education, productivity, and overall well-being.

Empowering Women through Skill Training:

Through our comprehensive vocational training programs, we have empowered women with vital skills and knowledge. We impacted 458 individuals through sewing classes during this period, providing women with valuable skills to enhance their employability and entrepreneurship prospects. Additionally, 237 women received beauty parlor training, equipping them with the expertise to run their own businesses and achieve financial independence. Furthermore, 1,212 individuals gained computer skills, increasing their access to opportunities in the digital world.
