Our mission is to tell Detroit's stories and why they matter. We are committed to continuing to support the community during the COVID-19 pandemic, in fact, we were made for historic times like these.
The Detroit Historical Society was made for times like these. We tell Detroit's stories and why they matter - and in historic times like the one we are living in, the Detroit Historical Society is the only institution charged with preserving the stories and artifacts that will preserve this history for future generations.
While our museums were closed for a time during the pandemic, The Detroit Historical Society is committed to remaining your source for historical information on our great city. We are actively collecting your stories and artifacts and we are pleased to offer a wide variety of resources to our digital community of Detroit history lovers far and wide. Now is a great time to indulge your inner historian.
History is a powerful teacher and future generations will have much to learn from our experiences during this time. The Detroit Historical Society's work to preserve the history being made today will provide a crucial resource in the future. Similarly, we can learn much from the lessons of the past, whether from the Flu epidemic of 1918 or the civil unrest of 1967, our own history offers valuable lessons that will help us navigate the present and create a better future.
