Community Mental Health and Psychiatry manages various Mental Health related long-term facilities and group homes in the greater Cape Town and Boland areas,Western Cape Province, South Africa. Our focus is mainly based on Psychiatric Rehabilitation (PSR) principles and models. Our services include housing facilities for more than 300 residents and daily support services to many others.
Bowker House (Bellville) in South Africa, is a 66-bed frail care facility for psychiatric patients located on the Stikland Hospital Grounds, Bellville, South Africa. It is the only old age home/frail care for mental health patients in the country and is an essential service seeing that ordinary old age homes no longer admit elderly mental health patients.
All our residents need to be transported to local clinics, day hospital and emergency rooms, from time to time. We urgently need an adapted vehicle. It must be adapted to take a wheelchair or a "lying" patient in a stretcher.
Our organization serves one of the most vulnerable groups in society, namely people living with a psychiatric diagnosis and who also fall under the poorest of the poor. The organization mainly aims to get mental health patients living on the street and in night shelters in group homes seeing that they become a huge burden to the Department of Health, because they regularly need admissions to hospital.
