Project Report | Feb 28, 2023
Back from Zambia

By Marsha Winsryg | Director, AACDP

So much has already happened in 2023! In January, I visited Zambia for the first time in 3 years, and was at last able to see the communal farm with my own eyes and get my hands in the soil.

We’re calling the farm Zambezi Farm. What beautiful land it is, with red earth, fragrant green clumps of mululwe bushes and tall muzumina trees offering shade among the field crops. The air is sweet, punctuated only by the sounds of the farmers singing in the field and the cu-cooo-roo, cu-cooo-roo of the red-eyed dove. It is hard to imagine that just two years ago this was uncultivated bush. It feels like paradise.

It was wonderful to be back together with Sydney and the farmers (the Mama Bakhita mothers); to sing and weed with them, and to see how fully engaged they are with the farm. Their energy and stamina is impressive; they work in the fields all day, breaking only for lunch. We have begun building a simple house where they can stay over and work for a few days without the long commutes back and forth to town each day.

Last year you helped us raise money to start goat rearing. Soon after I left Zambia, the first baby goat was born! We had no idea that this project would be bearing fruit so soon!

You can help Zambezi Farm continue to grow! Please visit our GlobalGiving project page and the AACDP web site.
