Afghan Girls, Rays of Resilience
In a country where educational opportunities for young girls are often restricted, the Underground TechSheros project stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. This initiative, now preparing for its third phase, continues to provide vital digital literacy training and empowerment workshops to Afghan girls. Against all odds, these young women are embracing their right to learn and grow, demonstrating their unwavering determination to build brighter futures.
The Underground TechSheros project began its journey in early 2024, aiming to reach 150 female high school students from grades 7 to 12. The program's core mission is to equip participants with essential computer skills, from MS Office to web development and basic coding languages. However, its impact extends far beyond technical training. The curriculum also includes comprehensive women’s empowerment and mental health workshops, designed to build resilience, foster leadership, and promote a sense of agency among the students.
During the second phase, which concluded in July 2024, the program made notable strides. It successfully reached 147 girls across its IT and coding classes. Students not only mastered essential computer applications but also gained confidence and a sense of purpose. Workshops on mental health, reproductive health, and leadership were particularly impactful, providing young women with the knowledge and skills to navigate complex social challenges and advocate for their rights.
One student shared how the program transformed her outlook: “Before this class, I felt hopeless and unsure of my future. But now, I am equipped with the skills and confidence to pursue my dreams. This class has empowered me to be strong despite the challenges in my life.”
The program’s success is a testament to the bravery and determination of both the students and the dedicated instructors who teach in secret to protect the girls’ right to education. Despite the heightened risks and increasing restrictions, these girls and their teachers continue to defy the odds, embodying resilience in the face of adversity.
As Underground TechSheros gears up for its third phase, the team is committed to continuing this vital work. By following the successful model of the previous phases and incorporating valuable lessons learned, the program aims to build on its achievements. Leveraging the insights gained from the M&E results, the team will refine the curriculum and strengthen the delivery of IT and coding courses alongside empowering workshops. This data-driven approach will help increase the program's impact, ensuring that the next phase more effectively addresses the needs and aspirations of young Afghan girls aged 14-25. By doing so, Underground TechSheros will continue to provide a safe and supportive environment where these young women can learn, grow, and break free from societal constraints.
This initiative’s profound impact would not have been possible without the unwavering support of donors and the extraordinary courage of the Afghan girls who are determined to learn, even when the odds are stacked against them.
Thank you for standing with us on this journey toward a brighter, more equitable future. We look forward to your continued support in ensuring no one is left behind.
