Dear Supporter,
All parents are anxious when they leave their child in the care of someone other than the family. This is more so when your child has a disability and is vulnerable.
In May, the Care Assistant, Minja left the Day Center after working there for ten years. Change can be scary, especially if you have no control or input into the decisions being made. The parents had known this was going to happen and had wanted to ensure that their children would continue to receive the same level of care and attention as she had provided. We supported the parents to plan a meeting with the Director of Social Services and to decide on the issues they wanted to discuss with him. At the meeting they were able to ask for his support in providing education to meet the needs of their children, for an appropriately trained person to work with the children and for more speech therapy and psychological support. They also expressed their desire for transport to and from their homes to the Day Centre. The new Care Assistant, Lindita has made a good start in getting to know each young person and learning what they can do and what they enjoy doing.
Genta is thirteen years old and is the fourth child of five. Her family are poor and rely on monthly welfare payments. Genta has been attending the center for 8 years. She has epilepsy and learning difficulties. Genta is quiet and likes to work on her own rather than in a group with others. Her mother says she really enjoys coming to the centre each day and the family is pleased that they have this facility to support the care of Genta.
Can you support the work we are doing in the Day Center, by making a donation on 18th July? Small donations will be matched, doubling your gift and ensuring we can provide more equipment and support to the new care assistant.
