128 children in Kukes Municipality have a disability that affects their daily lives. This means that they are unable to join their peers in the kindergarten or school and remain without education or socialization. The Day Center for Children with Disabilities needs input to make it the first choice for children and their parents. Currently it lacks toys, equipment and skilled staff and parental support, meaning that children stay home and do not receive the interventions they need.
This project will be the catalyst for change in equipping the Day Center with a range of didactic and practical toys and equipment for various ages and needs. Simultaneously supporting through regular training and coaching the care assistant and volunteers to engage 25 children in different activities to improve their skills and abilities towards their inclusion in school and their community. Parents will be encouraged to form a self-support group to raise the level of information and help.
National legislation and policies aim to ensure that children with disabilities are included and educated alongside their peers and that they become active members of society; this project will begin the journey to achieving this goal. Early intervention and providing high quality services are required to change the destiny and the development of children with disabilities. This support will add to that provided by the local government.
