Dast-e-Shifa ("hand of healing") is a Sindh Ajrak Welfare Trust initiative removing the lifelong cost barrier for poor kidney-failure patients. Through an MOU with partner hospitals, verified deserving patients receive free hemodialysis, labs, and medicines-with the Trust settling bills directly. Starting with one hospital, this scalable model ensures transparent financing without patients handling cash.
CKD prevalence ranges 12.5-30% among Pakistani adults, with far higher rates in diabetics. Rural patients travel 50-150 km for dialysis, as units are city-concentrated and government slots are oversubscribed. Each session costs Rs.3,000-8,000; patients need 8-13 monthly, plus labs and medicines exceeding Rs.20,000/month. Families cannot afford this, forcing skipped sessions, rationed medicines, or treatment cessation all life-threatening.
Dast-e-Shifa secures a discounted MOU package rate with a partner hospital, covering sessions, consumables, labs, and medicines. SAWT settles all bills monthly-patients pay nothing at care point. Verified, needs-based enrolment ensures only the deserving are enrolled. Once enrolled, treatment continuity is guaranteed, eliminating missed sessions due to unaffordable costs, without building new infrastructure.
Lives are sustained through uninterrupted dialysis, preventing avoidable mortality. Families are shielded from catastrophic health spending and debt. Rural access gaps narrow as transport support is considered. Patients and caregivers can continue earning. Transparent per-patient costing builds donor trust. The MOU model is scalable to more hospitals. Over time, patient data can support future CKD screening and early-detection camps in the same communities.
