The project Danzarea gives scholarships to 60 at-risk children and teenagers in Panama to learn aerial and contemporary dance, and how culture can better their lives. Creativity, discipline, and concentration are encouraged in order to build their self-esteem and values, and how to thrive regardless of situations of violence and other risks in their communities.
There are currently more than 2,500 children at social risk only in Panama City according to the Secretaria para la Prevencion de la Delincuencia Juvenil. The public education system is deficient and lacks culture as a part of children's integral education. As a result, generations of young Panamanians remain in poverty, surrounded by violence, lack of values, respect, integrity and work ethics. This project will contribute to the cultural and integral education of 60 children in 2019.
Danzarea provides a safe place for children to grow and develop their abilities and skills through aerial and contemporary dance. This learning process instills cooperation, self respect and for others, and conflict resolution skills to raise good citizens and provide tools for them to break the poverty cycle in which they were born.
This project which started in 2008 has benefited already more than 2,500 children and teenagers from at-risk communities in Panama City, instilling love for art and culture. Danzarea will contribute to the integral education of this 60 children with the goal that they remain in the project until they complete high school education. They will be encouraged to finish school, continue with university studies, and become young adults that will sustain a job and finally break their poverty cycle.
This project has provided additional documentation in a PDF file (projdoc.pdf).
