Summary
Due to the COVID19 pandemic in Mozambique (15/09/21: 150.000 cases, 1.900 death), the RP (President of the Republic of Mozambique) decided to close the school/boarding schools only in the main cities of the country between July e August of 2021, giving the right to the reopening at the beginning of September. In the intervention areas of ESMABAMA, and keeping all the protective measures, the schools stayed open and also the 4 boarding schools. The respect of the protective measures have an impact on our schools because we are just able to host in 2021, 1.600 boarding students instead of 2.000 in a normal period.
Currently, with the support of one of our partner some works are ongoing in Mangunde (Chibabava District) as the rehabilitation of the General school, boarding schools, library, sanitary blocks and refectory (roofs, windows, walls, …). And with the support of another partner we can provide part of the total basic food to the boarding school students. (Please see pictures below)
Challenges
Guarantee the functioning of 4 general schools with 6.400 students, 3 agricultural Institutes with 262 students and in total of 1.600 boarding students is a big challenge. Currently we are mainly fighting to ensure to the boarding students, food and hygiene material knowing that each student only pay / month 2€, just representing 10% of the monthly basic needs.
The other challenge we are facing is the rehabilitation of our damaged buildings (schools, boarding schools, health centres,….) which need some works due to the 3 past storms and cyclones between 2019-2021.
Results
From the past July and normally until the next October, we should have rehabilitated the main part of our building in Mangunde including classroom, boarding school, refectory and sanitary blocks (please see pictures in annex).
From the reopening of the boarding schools in 2021, the 26 of February, we are managing to ensure the basic food for each student: corn – 0,5Kg/day, bean – 0,065Kg/day, sugar – 0,05Kg/day, salt – 0,01Kg/day, oil – 0,05Kg/day. ESMABAMA provide also the basic hygiene material for the individual hygiene of the boarding students and the cleaning of the buildings, mainly the sanitary blocks, bedroom and refectory.
Next step
ESMABAMA will finish the current rehabilitation in Mangunde before the end of the last October. But we are seeking other partners to support the needs in the others intervention areas where we have works of rehabilitation particularly for the technical school, primary school and maternity ward in Estaquinha and secondary and primary school, bathrooms and storeroom in Machanga. Moreover, it will be necessary to continue, until December, providing food for the 1.600 boarding students and COVID19 preventive materials for the teachers, students and health centres.
