Cambodian Eye Mission --Dr Chris Lyon

By DR CHRIS LYON | Director, THE BLINDNESS FOUNDATION

Cambodian Eye Mission Report

After a devastating fire at the Phnom Penh's Children's Hospital Medical Supply storage facility, started by a careless cooking stove spill, the entire stock of medical supplies was destroyed. Nevertheless development continues apace. A new wing - actually a third storey on the existing two storey structure- has been added to the Children's Hospital to acomodate the overflow of children and other patients.

Even as development  encouragingly proceeds challenges remain in treating poor Cambodians. Unlike Rousseau's fantasy of an idyllic Garden of Eden with natives enjoying a pastoral paradise, the reality is often grinding poverty and disease. As these subsistence farmers transition into the 21st century they bring along cultural baggage in the form of poor eating habits and diets from centuries of custom and belief  More education is the solution if change is to be accomplished. Diabetes, with its attendant eye disease such as cataracts and bleeding in the retina, is accelerating throughout the populations in SE Asia .More rice does not always help.

Dr Walter Reed , famous for confirming the mosquito as the vector for yellow fever, aftter allowing himself to be bitten, nailed this concept, which became the mantra of THE BLINDNESS FOUNDATION in reducing blindness.

"HELP US, HELP OTHERS, HELP THEMSELVES "

Dr Reed puportedly said-" Alone as a Doctor I can treat & cure 10 patients, but if I train 10 Doctors ,

I can cure 100 patients .".

And so it is with THE BLINDNESS FOUNDATION   .  Please visit our website for photos - www.blindcure.com

Our missions have evloved to educate and train local eye doctors & Nurses to better serve their native populations with knowledge, education and skill-sets, to produce a multiplier effect for development

Thank you for your kind assistance,

CHRISTOPHER LYON , MD, PhD , Medical Director THE BLINDNESS FOUNDATION
