Situation Report: Ebola Outbreak Response in Uganda
Organization: Good Cause Foundation
Date: May 23, 2026
Background
Uganda is currently responding to imported cases of Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD), a strain of Ebola associated with the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The outbreak presents a growing public health concern due to cross-border movement, limited healthcare resources in vulnerable communities, and the absence of an approved vaccine or specific treatment for the Bundibugyo strain.
Current Situation
As of May 23, 2026, Uganda has confirmed five Ebola cases, including at least one reported death. Confirmed cases include travelers arriving from the DRC, a healthcare worker exposed during patient care, and individuals linked through transportation and close contact.
Although widespread community transmission has not yet been reported, health authorities continue to intensify:
Contact tracing and surveillance
Border screening and monitoring
Infection prevention and control measures
Community awareness and sensitization campaigns
The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Health, has requested approximately USD 24 million to strengthen emergency response efforts over the next three months.
Humanitarian Concerns
The outbreak threatens already vulnerable populations, particularly:
Children and women
Low-income households
Refugee and border communities
Frontline healthcare workers
Fear, misinformation, and limited access to healthcare services continue to increase the risks faced by communities, especially in underserved areas.
Response Efforts
Global humanitarian partners, including globalgiving.org, have activated emergency support mechanisms to assist affected communities and local responders.
The Ebola Crisis Relief Fund is supporting:
Emergency healthcare response
Community education and awareness
Hygiene and infection prevention initiatives
Support for vulnerable families
Protection and assistance for children and displaced populations
At the community level, organizations like Good Cause Foundation continue to support awareness, community mobilization, and vulnerable populations through grassroots engagement and humanitarian outreach.
Funding Need
Additional emergency funding is urgently needed to:
Strengthen community awareness and prevention
Support frontline responders and health workers
Provide hygiene materials and protective supplies
Reach underserved and high-risk communities
Protect vulnerable children and families

Good Cause Foundation humbly appeals to donors, partners, and well-wishers to support ongoing Ebola response efforts in Uganda through the GlobalGiving Ebola Crisis Relief Fund.

Conclusion
Uganda has previously demonstrated strong leadership in containing Ebola outbreaks. However, continued vigilance, community engagement, and timely humanitarian support remain critical to preventing further spread and protecting vulnerable communities during this evolving public health emergency.
