How a Sex Kit Drive-Thru Helped us Rise Above COVID

By Abigail Rangel | Outreach Coordinator

Women’s Health Specialists’ Outreach team has been working hard to get through COVID-19 along with the rest of the world. The outreach team saw a need in the community for resources during this difficult time. Peer Outreach Workers between the ages of 15-29 along with the Public Relations Director got to work finding solutions. An idea soon emerged, a COVID safe drive-thru where Outreach staff can safely distribute much-needed supplies and resources, better known as a Sex Kit Drive-thru.

The Outreach team began organizing to make this vision into a reality. Since the start of the stay-at-home orders, Outreach staff has found it hard to reach out to their community. Outreach in the community primarily consisted of face-to-face interactions whether it be handing out resources and tools at the local skate park, hosting spaces for youth to learn about sexual health, or tabling at community events. Outreach pre-COVID was no longer an option for the safety and wellbeing of the community and staff.

The approach was now much different. Outreach staff pushed our social media to reach the community. Outreach workers began to learn more about how to promote on social media, create social media posts, and communicate as a team despite the distance. Outreach staff eventually meet up to create our Quarantine Sex Kits, staff masked up, and were socially distanced to prevent the spread of COVID. Quarantine Sex Kits included safer sex supplies such as condoms and lube, information about Women’s Health Specialists’ services, masks, and gloves, as well as other community resources about local organizations.

The Outreach team was successful and hosted its first Sex Kit Drive-thru! Outreach created a fun and inviting atmosphere to welcome in cars, cyclists, and walk-ups. Staff followed COVID safety guidelines to deliver bags to Sex Kit Drive-thru participants. The community received the Sex Kit Drive-thru well. The Outreach team has made plans to host one monthly for the duration of the pandemic. The youth can receive much-need supplies and tools as well as something to look forward to during these difficult times.

Please enjoy these photos of our Sex Kit Drive-thru along with youth Peer Outreach Workers. Thank you for supporting our work and the leadership of young people in our communities.
