Exciting News!

Women’s Health Specialists has a new addition to our Young Women’s Leadership Program.

The importance of knowing your body, informed choices regarding birth control, removing the barriers to reproductive health care, learning about community support and resources WHS is introducing “The Red Box Project”.

“The Red Box Project”, addresses cultural violence against women empowering young women in our community to become change agents in eradicating this violence. With The Red Box Project, young women will provide information and practical tools to aid in the transformation of underlying beliefs that lead to sexist behavior and attitudes. WHS believes that this project along with the Young Women’s educational sessions will help create well informed young women in our community.

This project will be beneficial to our community by shining a light on the many ways that sexism feeds violence against women of all ages, sharing the empowering message that each member of our community can become a catalyst for change. As part of the Young Women’s Leadership Program students will enter with an open mind and exit with an expanded perspective. They will have an opportunity to share their thoughts what violence against women means to then, learn about what other young women have to share about their experiences is sexism, harassment, inequality, rape and other acts against women of all ages.

Past Leadership Graduates, will work with WHS staff in finding young women in their community that would benefit by attending this training. These young women will also help create, teach, become mentors for this group of young women.

These young women will take what they have learned to schools, community agencies, community events, and beyond. They will learn leadership and networking opportunities which will help create a healthier, informed community and the generations of young women in the future.

Empowering Her Community

We are excited to share with you the current project and success of our Young Women’s Leadership Program!

Kayla is a past graduate from the Young Women’s Leadership Program. Kayla has been actively involved in the local community and works in the schools with at risk youth. Currently Kayla has come back into our circle and is actively doing outreach within the community informing others about accessing services to get STD/HIV testing, birth control, pregnancy test, condoms and encouraging women to know about their bodies.

Kayla is also currently in the process of expanding the knowledge she gained from the Young Women’s Leadership Training by recruiting young women from her own community to participate. Kayla will be a leader of at the Young Women’s Leadership Training with 10-15 individuals and encourage them to also be informed and share information with others. Kayla is working with our current educators to prepare this training and present it in a culturally respectable way to her peers. She is informing the trainers of issues that her peers are dealing with today. This will help our program meet the needs of her community and help our program grow.

It is amazing to see the growth and confidence within Kayla. The Young Women’s Leadership Program truly helps build leaders and empowers women with success!! We are very excited to have Kayla come back to us and want to empower other people in her community. She is the participant who is now the leader!!!

The picture attached shows Kayla participating in an outreach event within her community. Kayla talks with people and expresses the importance of knowing your body and accessing services.

Cultural Youth YES Partnership

Women's Health Specialists has partnered with Inter-Tribal Council of California Inc. for youth training September 5th thru the 8th, 2014. here in Northern California. Title of this youth education session is (Tribal Youth Preparedness Cultural Camp) "Just Represent". WHS has taken our YES training curriclum and merged it with the Native Youth education sessions. Youth that will be attending are ages 12 thru 18 years old. WHS is supporting empowering young women to be peer educators within their community and culture. The location for this event is Whiskey Town Environmental Camp, Redding CA. Within this enviorment, youth will be educated in Removing Barriers to Reproductive Health for youth, Making healthy choices, understanding what is Cultural Competency. All education sessions will be woven in with Native American workshops. This Cultural Camp is designed to be youth friendly, inter-action for all. Events and activities include, CPR & First Aid Certifiation, Prevention/Educational Workshops, Youth Pow Wow, Youth Dance Group,basket Weaving/Beading. and more. Women's Health Specialists is very honered to be invited and have our staff take part in this empowering weekend. Youth will be able to take this education back to their communities formatted to educate and empower youth within their culture.

This provides a content rich program that engages and empowers future community leaders and a positive change for our community and beyond.

I want to share some successes from 2 past graduates of the WHS YES trainings.

Jackie, went thru our YES training, and here are her thoughts.I have used what I have learned from the Young Women's Leadership Program by referring my friends to Women's Health Specialists and to all of the other organizations in my community. Local Indians for Education offered me the job of Teen Program Manager that I have held for 1 year and have worked with many yourth during this time. Have gone back to school at Shasta College and now working on my Nursing Degree. Thank you for providing this great program it really did change my life and and I found my power for change.

Ivy, "What I learned from the Young Women's Leadershiup Program is how important it is to know yourself and your body. They taught us about informed choices for reproductive health,community resources and had inter-active presentations that supported what we learned. I am now attending Shasta College anf going into the Law Enforcement field. After the program was over I would definitely do it again!
