Summary

We help people talk about childhood sexual harm with confidence, care and Serious Joy- our belief that even the hardest topics can be held with warmth and hope. Using film, events and digital content, we make these conversations more approachable for survivors, those who support them, and the organisations working alongside them. Our work explores how childhood sexual harm is experienced differently across identities and communities, turning insight into practical tools that help break silence.

Challenge

It is likely that one person reading this will have experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA). CSA affects 1 in 4 people globally, yet is famously underfunded and avoided. This is reflected in both government avoidance to create legislation around this issue, the lack of compliance from big tech, and a general reluctance and fear from the general public to talk about it. CSA thrives through secrets, and so community building is difficult.

Solution

Our platform is the largest open-source resource dedicated to giving people practical and approachable advice on how to talk about childhood sexual abuse with our unique method of 'serious joy'. Each year, we release six new videos which focus on how the experience of CSA is different based on a different identity or experience, like dating, race, refugee status. Our content is aimed at educating the friends & family of survivors, as they are more likely to be told and not know what to do.

Long-Term Impact

This project enables us to release another season of our podcast series, empowering our audience of 1000 active listeners of survivors of sexual abuse and their allies. This season's focus will be voted on by our community, but will focus on topics like like being a parent as a survivor, being an 'imperfect' survivor, and the narratives around body image, fatness and marginalised religions. Many of these experience are never platformed in mainstream education on childhood sexual abuse.
