Refugee Support Update #5

Recently, I had the honor and privilege of meeting a family from Afghanistan. They gave me permission to share some of their story with you. They are one of the many families that Creative Life Foundation provides food donations, education materials/support, and regular home visits.

The daughter, who I will name Jane (not her real name), answered most of my questions as the person with the strongest English skills. She is 16 years old and was born in Iran. When I asked why her family left Afghanistan, she replied, "The Taliban hurt my mom and dad. My parents left because it was not safe".

Even though the circumstances of this family are beyond challenging, and they are counting the days until their resettlement, the dad said he is grateful to be safe and have a roof over their head.

I asked Jane about her education.

She told me that an organization helped her enroll in a Thai school. "At first, I hate school."

Even though she was 14 years old at the time, she was put into the 2nd grade with her younger brother due to the language barrier. She got made fun of a lot during that first year. "My brother didn't get made fun of because he was younger.", she said.

2-years later, it's still a challenge going to a Thai school, but she likes and looks forward to her English class. English is her favorite subject.

Her eyes widened when I mentioned the library of books CLF has at our office and that we can start delivering her books every month. She requested her favorite genres—fantasy and romance :)

She asked us to bring children's books for her brother so he can improve his English.

Jane's brother came out of his shell when asked if he had any friends at school. He whispered in his sister's ear and proudly waited for his sister to translate, "my brother says that he has eight friends."

We all laughed.

While this family anticipates having to wait another 2 or 3 years before they can relocate to another country, our team at CLF is dedicated to making their wait time a little more bearable. We will continue delivering food, books for Jane and her brother, helping pay for school uniforms and shoes, and other needs that arise.

Would you consider adding $25 to your monthly grocery budget and help us provide food every month for families like Janes?

From all of us at Creative Life Foundation and the people we serve,

Thank you!
