BNUU provides access to quality community based mental health services in remote areas of northern Uganda. Our mandate is to train health workers in primary health care facilities to assess and treat persons with mental illness. Our beneficiaries are empowered to set-up community drug banks at the health facilities, to ensure consistent access to mental health medicines. This project will provide start-up medicines to the community drug bank, and seed capital to self-help groups' loaning schemes
In northern Uganda, persons with mental illness amid the COVID-19 pandemic have faced a deterioration in their quality of life due to inadequate supplies of mental health medicines. The area experienced war for over 20 years and is the poorest region in the country. The supply of mental health medicines is not enough for the increasing demand and this means vulnerable people are missing out on medicines as they may not be able to afford to buy them.
This project will provide start-up medicines to community drug banks and seed capital to self-help groups' loaning schemes to increase access to finance and create a boost in their socio-economic activities. Steady recovery from mental health conditions require continuous access to medicines. Drug Banks is an initiative where clients contribute a fixed amount of money every month, and procure mental health medicines so they are prepared in the event of shortages in the health facilities.
The project will support 600 persons with mental disorders and epilepsy to have access to quality mental health treatment which will promote wellbeing, increase their productivity and reduce mental health related deaths.
