Creating strong beginnings for migrant children

By Prameela V. | CEO, Sampark

Healthy food today, brighter futures tomorrow.
Healthy food today, brighter futures tomorrow.

Migrant children are constantly moving, thus leaving gaps in their skills, education levels, and social integration. Early years care and education can bridge these gaps. Particularly, early years care can act as a lifeline for migrant children: it offers a chance at a bright future, stability despite the transient nature of migration, and the foundational skills to learn and thrive.

In this regard, recognising the high number of migrant workers present in India, specifically, in Bangalore, Sampark runs Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) centers for migrant children. Having opened more than 125 ECCE centers since 2007, Sampark currently runs 28 ECCE centers in Bangalore, providing early years education and care for more than 1712 migrant children.

Let us take a closer look at a few of our ECCE centers

  1. Whitefield ECCE Centre: Nallurhalli, Whitefield, Bengaluru, Karnataka-560066.
  2. Patalamma ECCE Centre: Patalamma Layout 291, FCI Main Road VS Reddy Layout, Patalamma Layout Kadugodi Road, Bangalore-560067
  3. Wind Mills ECCE Centre:  Wind mills Basavanna Nagara Near Government School Hoodi white field Bangalore -560048
  4. Bidadi ECCE Center: Rangegowdana Doddi, Manchanayakana Halli, Bidadi, Ramanagar-562109
  5.  Siddapura ECCE Centre- Sri Byraweshwar Swamy Vasathi Nilaya, Siddapura, Whitefield, Bangalore - 560066
  6. Haralur ECCE Centre - Near Dinne Anjaneya Temple road, Near Orchids International School, Haralur, Bangalore - 560102.
  7. Bellandur ECCE Center - Near Sobha Daisy, Margosa Ave, Green Glen Layout, Bellandur, Ibbaluru, Bangalore -560103

Across these 7 centres, during the reporting period of April 2025 to July 2025, a total of 688 (Boys - 308, Girls - 380) migrant children gained access to early years education, quality health, and improved nutrition through Sampark's interventions.

Creating strong beginnings for migrant children

Early Years Education:

  • At Sampark's ECCE centers, migrant children receive tailored support that addresses their unique learning needs, whether they are starting their educational journey, preparing for school, or re-entering the formal education system.
  • Our approach focuses on holistic development: cognitive, physical, and socio-emotional, while building the skills and confidence needed to succeed in school and beyond.
  • Through these targeted interventions, Sampark aims to give every migrant child a strong foundation for a brighter future.

Nutrition Support:

  • At the ECCE centers, Sampark provides three nutritious meals daily to all migrant children, ensuring their health and supporting normal cognitive development.
  • Children's growth is monitored as per WHO standards. Supplementary nutrition is provided to those below age-appropriate benchmarks. During the reporting period, 51 children were undernourished; 41 have since reached healthy growth parameters, while others are progressing.
  • By safeguarding children’s health, Sampark enables regular attendance, better learning, and stronger educational outcomes for a brighter future.

Health and immunization support:

  • During the reporting period, 344 children were screened for various ailments and diseases through 8 health camps.
  • Deworming tablets were also provided to children to protect them from intestinal parasites, and improve their nutritional intake.
  • Additionally, all 35 eligible children received complete age-appropriate immunization, ensuring 100% coverage. This strengthens their immunity, protects them from preventable diseases, and helps safeguard their education from being disrupted by poor health.
  • During the reporting period, 11 mothers were linked to pre- and post-natal maternal healthcare services. Good maternal health lays the foundation for better educational outcomes among migrant children. Healthy mothers are more likely to have safe pregnancies and give birth to babies with healthy birth weights, reducing the risk of developmental delays. They can provide adequate early nutrition, emotional care, and cognitive stimulation, all of which are critical for brain development and school readiness. Strong maternal health also means greater family stability, fewer school absences, and a nurturing environment where children can thrive-ultimately enabling them to learn better and achieve their full potential.

Community Engagement:

  • During the reporting period, Sampark engaged with 421 parents, encouraging not only active parental involvement but also helping parents understand the value of education, motivating them to keep their children in school and prevent dropouts.

Through these comprehensive interventions, Sampark’s ECCE centres continue to serve as safe, nurturing spaces where migrant children can learn, grow, and dream beyond the limitations imposed by a transient lifestyle. By combining quality early education, nutrition, healthcare, and active community engagement, we are not only addressing immediate developmental needs but also laying the groundwork for long-term educational success. Every child who walks through our doors takes a step closer to breaking the cycle of poverty and building a future filled with opportunities, proving that strong beginnings truly shape brighter tomorrows.

While data reflects the scale of our impact, individual stories reveal the depth of transformation. The following case story, of Shekhar (one of the children at our ECCE centers) offers a glimpse into how lasting difference our ECCE centres make in shaping a child’s future.

  • 0-3 years: 9 months old Shekhar and his sister (2 years old) joined the ECCE center in 2010. In his first thousand days, through health camps, he was immunized and included in the government health records.
  • 3-5 years: At the Iblur Center, simulation activities, coloring exercises, learning to study and play in a
group, everyday hygiene and cleanliness, made him school ready. Mother’s income improved with
childcare support. With her children cared for, Shekhar’s mother could take up work: first as a helper at the ECCE center and later as a domestic worker, contributing significantly to the family
  • 5 years and above: In 2015, Shekhar got mainstreamed into formal education as he got enrolled at the Ibluru government school for grade 1. He gained confidence, and continued his education.
  • 6-14 years: Education continuity (6
years- 14 years): Shekhar struggled with his studies often. But the dedicated Sampark teacher persisted, providing constant encouragement and additional support for tough topics in class. Thanks to
her support, Shekhar gradually adjusted, managing his struggles in education without dropping out from school. Step by step, he progressed through school and successfully completed his 10th grade with 52% marks.
  • 16 years (Present): Shekhar is now pursuing his pre-university education in Arts at Agara Government P.U. College, with dreams of a bright and resilient future.

Through its lifecycle approach, Sampark ensures that every intervention—from early education to health, nutrition, and community engagement—works together to create lasting change. By investing in the earliest years, we are not just supporting children today, but building the foundation for their success well into the future.
