Summer is in Full Swing!

Narhmaya's smile
When you visit our farms you will get the biggest welcome smile from New American Farmer Narhmaya. She recently arrived in Denver with her husband Dilly from Bhutan. They have spent the past 20 years in a refugee camp in Nepal. Working at our farm they are having their first experience working at an American job. Some of our vegetables they recognize, some they don't. We harvest our zucchini at 8 inches but they like those monster zucchinis! Next week they will experience their first market as farmers in Denver.
This summer has been full so far as we've built our newest farm at 44th & Vallejo. In less than 5 weeks we've transformed an abandoned lot in the Sunnyside neighborhood into an oasis of herbs and vegetables. This was all thanks to the skills and energy of our team of New American Farmers and our urban farming specialist and Director of Production, Ariel Chesnutt. We begin our market August 10th and will continue each Wednesday through the autumn.
Our Parking Lot Farm at 42nd & Steele is humming again this season led by our Community Stewards Paula and Trineka. But they are not alone in their work. Paula's assistants are her 13 year old daughter Kasmira and her 6 year old granddaughter Briasia. Trineka often brings her husband and sons. They are gearing up for their weekly markets each Thursday beginning August 11th.
This might be a busy time but it's also
the best time for hands-on learning we are offering weekly workshops at our farms. From season extension techniques to harvesting tips, proper water usage to weeds, pests, and disease management. More information at our website:
www.FeedDenver.com
And in the midst of all of this...we are building a prototype passive solar greenhouse and aquaponics operation at Denver Housing Authority's Sustainability Park in Downtown Denver. We will keep you in the loop as we bring together fish and greens under the Colorado sun!
Help us keep things going! Your donation will help Dilly and his wife Narmaya as they learn about farming and marketing in their new home. Your donation will help Paula and Trineka prepare their beds and plan for crops to take them through the winter. Your donation will help us develop a low tech and low energy use aquaponics operation.
We hope your gardens are verdant and we hope to see you soon.
