By Professor Andrew Rowland | Chair of the Board of Trustees, SicKids
Hello friends of SicKids,
Since we last wrote to you the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has taken hold on countries around the world. Our hearts go out to all of the families who have been affected by this terrible virus.
SicKids has, unfortunately, also suffered as a result of COVID-19. Just before the virus appeared we had agreed two fabulous projects to supply sensory equipment to two hospitals in the North West of England to build brand-new, state-of-the-art Sensory Spaces in their Emergency Departments.
We were in the process of sorting out the delivery and installation arrangements for the Sensory Equipment when COVID-19 appeared. This virus has, sadly, meant that Emergency Departments have had to be rapidly re-designed. Visitng hospitals is now subject to significant restrictions and the focus for Emergency Departments has had to be on providing COVID-19 safe facilities before moving on to the installation of new equipment (such as Sensory Equipment). There are now, of course, infection control measures to think about in relation to Sensory Spaces in Emergency Departments and it is going to take us a little while to work through these with the organisations we have agreed to partner with.
However, all is not lost - the funding is ring fenced and as soon as the above issues have been resolved we'll be ensuring the sensory equipment we have agreed to supply gets to the children and young people who need it as quickly as we can.
Until then we just have to wait but we can assure you that SicKids is stable; we have four dedicated Trustees; our funds are all protected and as soon as we are able to start spending them again we will do; and we know that the enthusiasm of our supports remains as high as it always has been!
We'll update you again when we can and I'm hoping when we send you our next update in three months time, we'll be well on our way to supplying sensory equipment to two new (and we know fabulous!) projects in the North West of England.
Until then, please do stay safe and we are sending you all our very best wishes.
Kind regards,
Andrew
