Since 1997, Texas Diaper Bank (TXDB) has been dedicated to its mission: to addressing the diaper gap and its impact on Texas families in crisis. The diaper gap is the lack of access to an adequate supply of diapers, incontinence items, feminine hygiene products, and other healthcare items impacting the physical health, mental health, and economic well-being of low-income families and individuals.
Imagine having to choose between having enough clean diapers for your baby or providing food for your family. Which would you choose? For 1 in 3 US families, this struggle is real. No federal safety net programs cover the cost of diapers, leaving low-income families struggling to fill that gap. Additionally, 1 in 5 women report missing work, school, and other important events due to the lack of period products and 1 in 3 seniors are affected by incontinence.
Families and individuals seek help from TXDB for more than just diapers. We also provide much needed health-related products that families at times struggle to afford. This includes wipes, feminine hygiene supplies, incontinence products, and other related items. In 2020, we anticipate distributing over 2.5 million health-care products to 75,000 individuals in 15 Texas counties. Through distribution of supplies, education programs, and support services, TXDB is directly tackling the diaper gap.
TXDB addresses the diaper gap through a multi-pronged approach. In addition to services meeting immediate needs, TXDB offers education components, access to financial literacy classes, and referrals to other agencies, all designed to positively impact the physical health, mental health, and economic well-being of families and individuals.
