It’s hard to believe that it has been 6 months since we last checked in! Where has the time gone?
At The Hub, we continue to keep on our toes and bear witness to the transformative, creative and expansive work happening in our community. This update will give you, our supporters new and old, insights into the first half of 2023 and shares how we are building our vision of sustainability and community engagement.
5th Annual Positive Vibes Festival
February marked the return after the COVID-19 hiatus of our 5th Positive Vibes Festival, breaking new ground by reaching an audience of over 600 attendees! For months, our Hub team was joined by a Positive Vibes organising committee made up of creatives on the island to bring life to the event. This involved auditions and weekly practices to create moments where young and established performers would come together and share on their challenges, build intergenerational knowledge from the elder musicians like J Gool, and fine tune songwriting, voice projection, confidence and performance skills.
Many thanks to our financial and in-kind sponsors: Action Bequia, Grenadines Initiative, Interreg Caribbean, SOHO Beach House, De Reef, and private donors. To see the raw talent from Bequia develop into something extraordinary and powerful is what we continue to believe in at The Hub. We look forward to growing the Festival in 2024 and beyond and as you read on, you will see another amazing output that was birthed in Canouan.
International Biennale of Contemporary Art (BIAC) Martinique Partnership
In August of 2022, we started our engagement through a series of discussions with the Collectivité Territoriale de Martinique (the local Martiniquan government) to build an intra island collaboration supporting the BIAC-Réseaux project funded by Interreg Caribbean. In March 2023, our leadership team of Colin, Jessica and Holly were invited to make a formal presentation to launch the project along with meeting with partner organisations across the region and moving into deeper thinking and relationality with our neighbours. We connected with Terre d’Arts, Abité, Campus Caribbéan des Arts, MétisGwa, the Martinique Tourism Committee, the National Regional Park of Martinique, learned about the legacy of Aime Cesaire, saw several artist studios, museums and foundations.
The rich cultural spaces in Martinique continue to inspire us. Many thanks to Johanna Auguiac, the Deputy Director of Culture, Arts and Patrimony, Sarita Fanfant, the assistant Deputy, our primary liaison Matilde Dos Santos, the Project Manager of this Cultural Cooperation Project, and new friend, Elvis Lopez, Director of Ateliers 89 in Aruba, who all made our trip unforgettable. We share below one of the outcomes of this partnership and are excited on what the upcoming opportunities present for Bequia and our communities.
Bush Medicine Revival: Community Ecological Garden
Our Community Ecological Medicinal Garden, led by Luke and Alex Punnett of Chatoyer Gardens, continued to expand amidst a harsh dry season. Now we are so thankful for the rain and the volunteers from our community who continue to give shape to the space. If you wander in Port Elizabeth between the two primary schools you will see that the green space is starting to form and we continue to see substantial growth and blooms with many new medicinal species added (over 40 and counting!). Our stone beds are finished and we are prepping for workshops to be delivered before the end of the year. To add warmth to the garden we have started to work on seating and a wonderful and inspiring mural. Thank you to the Prince Claus Fund and the Goethe Institut for their funding and on-going support. Stay tuned for updates and opportunities that we will share very soon as we build out support and funding for this important climate-aware project. Also, if you see our team on site, please say hi and maybe get your hands dirty!
Soho House x The Hub ONE Fest Canouan
After witnessing first-hand the magic of Positive Vibes, Soho House approached us to collaborate on birthing a new festival on Canouan. The idea was to bring together creatives across the country, and breathe life to the slow season in the Grenadines through music, art, food and entertainment. And so, ONE Fest came to be: A two-day creative extravaganza featuring art, fashion, crafts and performances by local artistes and musicians - all set on the picturesque Soho Beach House resort. Our team produced the Saturday evening show, kickstarted by violinist Darren Andrews and followed several of our talented and rising Hub singers — including Enoch Ragguette and Dravin JD Peters (DraKing) with original songs set to be released soon (“Feeling Good” and “Champion” respectively), Judith Jackson’s ode to Tina Turner with “Simply The Best” and D'Yonté Telemaque singing the best of Alicia Keys.
We were all so fortunate to have beloved calypso and R&B legend Judy Boucher bless the crowd (reaching well over 300!) with “Can’t Be With You Tonight” — the single that hit No. 2 in the UK Charts back in 1987. Reggae fusion artiste and Hub Co-Founder Colin ‘Minkah’ Peters performed originals including “Positive Way” and “Money World”, and Abu Zanimah who combined his singing and guitar skills close off the evening’s performances. A huge thank you to the Positive Vibes Band for backing our performers and Joanne Wood for MC-ing! The festival was such a success, Soho House has already slated it in their calendar of events for June 2024!

Caribbean Circus Summer Camp with Métis’Gwa
As part of our ongoing efforts to reignite the connections between the Grenadines and the French West Indies, and one of the direct benefits from our partnerships through the BIAC-RÉSEAUX project, came our Caribbean Circus Summer Camp with METIS' GWA, a circus nonprofit from Guadeloupe. During the first week of July, we welcomed experienced and talented instructors Christopher Paniandy of Guadeloupe and Philippe Ribeiro of Brazil/France along with 12 Bequian youth to explore circus-related activities, from juggling, dance and acrobatics, along with a field trip to the Dolphin Gymnastics centre in St. Vincent. The camp culminated in a small show on the last day, including special circus and capoeira acts by our instructors and performances by three of our Hub singers. The event was attended by over 40 people, including parents, campers, and community members.
... and so much more to come for 2023!
We are grateful for your continued support as we journey together making big and small steps to cohere our community and provide more opportunities for growth, self-determination, bravery and healing. Our Creative Arts Centre remains open and buzzing with energy through our weekly painting workshops for youth and adults, our singing practices with Hub performers and our vibrant music production program. We promise to not keep you waiting another 6 months to hear from us, and will be sharing some exciting news soon about our organisational impacts and partnerships that are brewing.
