Summary

Wonder Sir helps families and clinicians recognize rare diseases earlier. Each year, we co-create 12 illustrated, clinician-reviewed diagnostic guides with patient communities and deliver them online and to grassroots clinics. We also run a 10-month program pairing 30 medical students with 15 patient groups across 30 schools to strengthen early-recognition skills. Implementation note: Hosted on GlobalGiving by Canbaoer Social Work Service Center and delivered in partnership with Wonder Sir.

Challenge

Rare diseases are individually rare but collectively affect millions. In China, many families spend years seeking a diagnosis, especially outside major hospitals. Frontline clinicians often have limited exposure and lack practical, patient-friendly tools to spot red flags and decide next steps. Delays mean avoidable suffering, higher costs, and lost time for treatment and care planning.

Solution

We co-create 12 clinician-reviewed visual guides annually with patient communities, transforming patient journeys into actionable comics and medical visuals. These guides are distributed online and offline to help families and clinicians recognize rare diseases earlier. Additionally, we run a 10-month training program for 60 medical students and patient leaders, empowering them with the tools to improve early diagnosis and care.

Long-Term Impact

In 12 months, we will produce 12 visual guides and train 60 medical students and patient leaders, impacting 1M+ individuals. This project will shorten diagnostic delays and improve early identification. Long-term, it will provide a scalable model for patient-centered education, empowering clinicians and families worldwide to enhance rare disease awareness and care.
