The project under nameCREATEDOMESTIC LIVELIHOODASSETS FOR REFUGEES” targets to strengthen capacity to respond to low household incomes in refugee settlements and Host Communities in Uganda.

30 households (20 refugee households and 10 refugee host community) have been skilled in Poultry farming project activities and started benefiting from poultry rearing as a domestic asset in Nakivale refugee settlement and host community in Uganda.

The project has currently started boosting household/domestic incomes as a need for supporting psychosocial and economic recovery in refugee and host communities through application of the acquired skills for creation of Domestic assets such as kitchen gardens for nutrition, vegetable and woodlots nursery beds, formation of compost manure, digging underground water reservoirs.

Completed Activities- Phase1 Quarter1-2026.

  • Community/Beneficiaries consultation and sensitization in 2 refugee zone and 1 host sub county about poultry rearing.
  • Profiling of all 100target beneficiaries for identification and grouping-Member Cards given.
  • Training in poultry rearing to members selected from 25 refugee households and 20 households from 1 host sub county.
  • Continuous training of selected project beneficiaries at the demonstration sites, identified 2 Local Group representatives/trainers for continuous training in local languages.
  • Financial literacy training to trained poultry farmers for phase1 2025-2026.
  • Household poultry project monitoring and support supervision through home surprise visits-lack effective data collection tools-tablet for project monitoring.

Existing Challenges:

  • Slow decision making by authorities in demarcating land and wood for demonstration sites in the refugee settlement.
  • Ineffective community mobilization facilities-use one mobile pickup to play recorded mobilization messages.
  • Limited funds, research, and monitoring tools.
  • High Financial reward expectation by the host community leaders.
  • Illiteracy of target persons-they are slow in skills conceptualization.
  • Communication barriers with the target groups especially the refugees.

Planned Activities for Phase1 Quarter2 2026-Skilling in Poultry Farming.

  • Community/Beneficiaries consultation and sensitization for Poultry Rearingas a Domestic Asset in 2 more refugee zone and 1 host community sub county.
  • Train/skilling in Poultry farming to 50 households (30 Refugees and 20 from host community).
  • Purchase and distribution of chicksto 50 target quarter households.
