Thank you for your support of Opportunity’s mission in Uganda. Because of you, farmers are improving their crops and increasing their income at harvest time and neighbors are creating jobs for neighbors. Charles is just one of many farmers benefiting from Opportunity International’s loans and mobile banking services.
Charles is a coffee farmer from the mountainous area of Mbale, Uganda. He has been farming organic coffee for over 15 years, as well as bananas and dairy cows. Through Opportunity Uganda, Charles obtained an agriculture loan, opened a savings account, and is registered for mobile banking. He also participates in the Edu-save program to ensure that his kids will stay in school. Charles is a founding member of the coffee cooperative Gumutindo which processes and sorts coffee, and the cooperative employs dozens of people during harvest time to sort and process coffee beans.
By registering for mobile banking, Charles is able to access his account by dialing a short-code on his basic Nokia handset, no smartphone needed! He and his fellow farmers are paid directly into their accounts, accessible by phone, when they deliver their coffee. The cooperative is thankful not to handle large amounts of cash, which used to leave their staff and the farmers vulnerable to being robbed on payment day. Now, farmers like Charles are happy because the money is in their account in a timely manner, and they can check the balance by phone.
