Throughout the last years, your generosity has enabled us to support Palestinian grassroot women’s needs in the face of the COVID-19 crisis. We greatly appreciate your kindness and support!
The COVID-19 crisis was particularly challenging for Palestinian women. Throughout the pandemic, we tried to sow the seeds that will hopefully flower well after the pandemic is behind us. Kayan is empowering grassroots Palestinian women leaders to respond to community needs. Kayan empowers women to work together to break down the barriers to gender equality through its involvement in about a dozen local women’s groups. In addition, we supported women suffering from domestic violence through our support hotline, a helpful resource in times of social distancing. Thanks to your support, we strengthened these undertakings, both of which provided support for women who had to deal with increased isolation from the community and other challenges due to the pandemic.
Our local groups were able to organize workshops on a variety of topics, campaigns, and community-building events targeted towards Palestinian women’s needs during these challenging times. In addition, the pandemic clarified the prevalence of SGBV and the urgent need to address it. We noticed a definite increase in the number of calls we received to our support hotline. We also made sure to publish each case of femicide, in order to make sure that the community can’t ignore what happens outside of the public sphere, especially during a time where most of our day to day lives took place behind closed doors.
We were also able to strengthen our partnerships with other local actors, including the Jusur Forum and the Fada Coalition – Palestinian Women Against Violence. Last but not least, your support helped us to invest in the future by educating Palestinian youth about the community’s needs, and women’s needs in particular, especially during times of crisis.
With all COVID-related restrictions having been lifted for a while now and having returned to a new sense of normalcy after the pandemic, we have made the decision to focus our efforts on other endeavors and discontinue this project. We invite you to keep up with our projects here on GlobalGiving and across our social media platforms, for example our GlobalGiving project specifically targeted towards ending violence against women, and to keep an eye out for future projects. If you feel so inclined, we would appreciate your support there.
