We work with 15,000 grandmothers caring for more than 60,000 orphaned and vulnerable children. These grandmothers were already living in poverty prior to the pandemic- the current situation has made it more difficult for them to generate an income and provide for themselves and the children in their care. Your donation will provide emergency supplies to the most vulnerable as well as supporting the communities we work with to access health care, counselling, education, legal advocacy and more.
Uganda continues to grapple with the health, education, economic & social impact of the pandemic itself and the measures used to try to reduce infection rates. These measures have meant that travel is restricted, health care harder to access, some children remain out of school, grandmothers are finding it harder to create small businesses and sell their goods and produce as buyers have less disposable income. Children have missed a lot of school and sexual & gender based violence has increased.
This project provides intensive support to those most in need. We provide emergency food, soap, medicine and sanitary towels to community members assessed as especially vulnerable. We provide ongoing support to help grandmothers generate an income- seeds, gardening tools, training. We support access to education through radio programs, sharing public health messages & distributing education packages. We provide targeted medical care, counselling and legal advocacy to survivors of sexual violence
This project is working to engender resilience and to support communities to overcome the additional challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. It will help grandmothers and the children in their care to access medical care, continue their education, develop skills and rise up out of poverty.
