Challenge

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown in Zimbabwe has brought about major changes in people's lifestyles and social relationships, which will have long-term impacts on their mental and physical health. We are seeing increased stress, anxiety, depression and fear amongst our service users. Demands for family therapy have grown in response to increased reports of gender-based violence. We believe the pandemic serves as a wake-up call to invest more in community family mental health in Zimbabwe.

Solution

The COVID-19 Community Family Mental Health Preparedness and Response Plan complements activities by the Ministry of Health and includes six main activities: 1. Community mental health awareness promotion; 2. Supporting the mental health of front-line workers; 3. Monitoring and risk assessment; 4. Capacity building for field staff; 5. Establishment of a toll-free line for remote tele-therapy and 6. Hosting our 2nd annual conference on maternal mental health in Africa.

Long-Term Impact

The COVID-19 Community Family Mental Health will increase awareness, acceptance, accessibility of mental health care in communities and improve sound mental health and wellbeing of the community. Also reduced stigma and discrimination which is the barrier is seeking mental health care services.
