Project Report | Sep 19, 2025
Kalumbila women Trained in Fashion and design

By Alex Bwaluka | Executive Director

1. Introduction

From February to May 2025, the Charity Centre for Children and Youth Development (CCCYD) facilitated a Fashion and Design Training Program in Kalumbila District. The initiative was designed to empower vulnerable women with practical vocational skills that promote self-reliance, income generation, and improved livelihoods.

This program aligns with CCCYD’s broader goal of supporting women’s economic empowerment and youth employment by equipping beneficiaries with sustainable skills for entrepreneurship and the job market.

2. Objectives of the Training

  • To equip participants with basic and advanced fashion and design skills, including tailoring, garment construction, and fabric finishing.
  • To build entrepreneurial capacity among women for self-employment and small business management.
  • To promote women’s economic empowerment by providing pathways to income-generating activities.
  • To enhance confidence and creativity among women through skill-based learning.

3. Training Methodology

The training was conducted over a period of four months (16 weeks) with a blend of theoretical and practical sessions.

  • Theory: Introduction to sewing machines, types of fabrics, measurement techniques, and business basics.
  • Practical: Hands-on garment design, cutting, sewing, embroidery, and finishing.
  • Entrepreneurship: Sessions on marketing, customer service, and pricing strategies.

Regular assessments were conducted to monitor progress and ensure participants acquired the expected competencies.

4. Participants

A total of 8 women successfully completed the training. These women were carefully selected based on vulnerability, interest in fashion and design, and commitment to completing the program.

5. Key Outcomes and Achievements

  • Skill Acquisition: All 8 participants gained foundational and intermediate skills in tailoring and design.
  • Production of Garments: By the end of the training, participants were able to produce shirts, dresses, skirts, and school uniforms.
  • Entrepreneurship Readiness: Participants demonstrated knowledge of starting and managing small tailoring businesses.
  • Increased Confidence: Women expressed improved self-esteem and confidence in pursuing independent livelihoods.
  • Community Impact: The training sparked interest from other women in Kalumbila, demonstrating potential for replication and scale-up.

6. Challenges

  • Limited sewing machines restricted practice time.
  • Some participants faced financial constraints for transport to the training venue.
  • Demand for additional training modules (e.g., knitting, beadwork) that could not be covered due to time and resource limitations.
  • Lack of starter-up kits

7. Recommendations

  • Provide additional sewing machines and materials to improve practical learning.
  • Extend training duration or introduce an advanced-level course for graduates.
  • Incorporate linkages to microfinance and village banking groups to support business start-ups.
  • Explore expansion of the program to reach more women in other parts of Kalumbila District.

8. Conclusion

The Fashion and Design Training for 8 women in Kalumbila District was a successful pilot initiative that demonstrated the potential of vocational training to transform lives. With continued support, the beneficiaries are well-positioned to generate income, support their households, and contribute to community development.
