Let us take this opportunity to tell you the success story of a transgender
Sumalatha is a transgender who was disowned by her parents when her sexual identity was revealed and her local community members. She left her house at the age of 18 years. She moved from a small village in Chittoor to Tirupati town.
She joined a small saree shop to work but faced a lot of discrimination because of who she was. For a few days, she was contemplating suicide as she ran out of money and loss of dignity.
With the help of GlobalGiving and other sources, we were able to give her counseling and confidence. We also gave her about Rs 20,000 as seed capital to start a small vegetable cart in a suburb of Tirupati.
She has since been earning well and slowly making monthly repayments. We are sure she will lead a self-reliant life in future and be a role model to others in a similar situation.
Project reports on GlobalGiving are posted directly to globalgiving.org by Project Leaders as they are completed, generally every 3-4 months. To protect the integrity of these documents, GlobalGiving does not alter them; therefore you may find some language or formatting issues.
