More than 130,000 Afghans have just fled the coronavirus outbreak in Iran and are now everywhere in Afghanistan. That is how the virus is rapidly spreading in the entire country ravaged by 40 years of war and a poor health system. We need to be fast in responding to Coronavirus Covid-19 and be innovative and work hard to educate people and provide them what they need to protect themselves.
COVID-19 has already had a devastating global effect - but the impact has been particularly severe upon Afghanistan. Their lack of basic sanitation such as masks, face-shields and even access to soap and water as well as lack of information about preventive habits make the country's citizens far more exposed to the dangers of the virus.
MMCC produces and distributes innovative masks and face shields, setting up hand-sanitizing stations, made from recycled plastic bottles and painting social distancing rings in public places. These are all being donated to hospitals, IDP camps, as well as to people on the streets, in the hope that everyone is able to protect themselves. The hand sanitizing stations are installed in the IDP camps where people are most vulnerable, as well as various locations close to bakeries and pharmacies.
We are also working to promote new positive and forward-thinking attitudes towards sanitation, which in the long term will improve the health of the entire community.
