Hearts of Gold Foundation's Corazones que Alimentan program tackles food insecurity among vulnerable families in Cuenca, Ecuador. We deliver nutrition-focused food kits every two weeks, paired with workshops on nutrition, health, and hygiene, family/community garden training, and psychosocial support - helping up to 500 families and 1,000 more people indirectly move from emergency relief toward lasting food security and self-sufficiency.
In Cuenca, Ecuador, rising food prices, unemployment, and informal work leave vulnerable households unable to afford nutritious food. Up to 500 families (about 1,000 more people indirectly) including children, single mothers, elderly people, and migrants face acute and chronic food insecurity. This raises the risk of malnutrition and poor health, especially among children, and undermines school attendance, family stability, and long-term development.
We deliver biweekly nutrition-focused food kits directly to families, paired with hands-on workshops on nutrition, preventive health, and hygiene. Families also receive training to grow their own food through family and community gardens, plus home visits and psychosocial support that build resilience and help households move from emergency relief toward lasting food security and self-sufficiency.
Over time, Corazones que Alimentan aims to reduce food insecurity among participating households by at least 20 percentage points, keep 90% of children in regular school attendance, and help 25-40% of families graduate to lasting food security and self-sufficiency. By combining immediate relief with nutrition education and food-production skills, the program helps break cycles of malnutrition and poverty across generations in Cuenca.
