Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa (GPFA) enables community groups to provide basic services and health information to local constituencies. Our approach is to build local leadership in the communities they serve. The slow and uncoordinated response of the national government has sowed mistrust, panic and complacency. The history of Liberian politics is fraught with favoritism among political and ethnic lines, disengagement with poor and rural communities, and suspicion of government action and engagement. The current Ebola outbreak resurrects ongoing tensions as it highlights how the national government prioritizes or ignores communities in its fight to slow the outbreak. GPFA recognizes the gap between government actors and the communities it serves, and works to build local leadership and groups to foster greater trust and cooperation. We believe that the outbreak will end when actors at all levels--the national and district governments, community-based organizations and the health sector--work cooperatively to engage local communities.
The purpose of this report is to highlight a few beneficiaries who used grants to build local knowledge and quell fears. The legacy of this effort fosters trust and cooperation in local communities.
