The Girls Sanitary Facilities project in public schools across Nigeria is essential for multiple reasons, impacting health, education, and social well-being: Improved Attendance and Academic Performance: Lack of access to sanitary facilities leads many girls to miss school during menstruation, which results in frequent absences and, over time, impacts their academic performance. Providing sanitary facilities helps keep girls in school consistently, supporting their educational attainment. Promoting Health and Hygiene: Clean and accessible sanitary facilities allow girls to manage their menstrual health safely and with dignity. Without proper facilities, they face higher risks of infection and poor menstrual hygiene, which can have lasting health consequences. Reducing Stigma and Empowering Girls: Access to sanitary facilities helps normalize menstruation, reducing stigma and fostering a supportive environment for girls. This can build their confidence, enabling them to fully participate in school activities and develop self-esteem. Addressing Gender Equality: Lack of proper facilities disproportionately affects girls, creating an unequal learning environment. Ensuring they have safe, clean facilities is a step toward gender equality in education, empowering girls to stay in school and pursue their ambitions. Encouraging Long-term Health Education: Sanitary facilities in schools offer an opportunity for health education, teaching girls about menstrual hygiene management and reproductive health. This early education can influence positive health behaviors throughout their lives. Creating Safe Spaces for All: Properly maintained facilities contribute to a safer school environment overall, reducing bullying, harassment, or embarrassment related to menstruation. Projects focused on girls’ sanitary facilities go beyond infrastructure; they address critical aspects of health, gender equality, and education. Investing in these facilities is an investment in a better future for girls in Nigeria, empowering them to succeed in school and life.
