FEBRUARY 2022 NEWSLETTER

Palm Institute’s 2025 GRADUATING CLASS HAS RETURNED

The continuing freshmen, who began in September 2021, are back on campus after the holiday break! Lectures and academic work resumed on Monday, January 31st, 2022.

 

CORPORATE ADVISORY COUNCIL

Palm Institute held its first quarterly meeting with the Palm Corporate Advisory Council on Thursday, February 3rd, 2022. The meeting explored admissions, fundraising opportunities, career seminar facilitation, building collaborations with other institutions, seeking internship possibilities and discussing the Palm Corporate Mentoring Program. 

 

VIRTUAL SOFT SKILLS ZOOM TRAINING –

The Student Life and Career Services Department at Palm Institute organized a training for all faculty and staff on how to integrate soft skills into their courses. The training took place on February 4th, 2022 and focused on assisting students with effective communication,  conducting research to further their critical thinking skills and developing team building, teamwork skills and leadership skills to encourage academic success.

 

WEEKEND FRESHMEN ORIENTATION

On Friday, February 4th, 2022, Palm Institute welcomed it’s third cohort of students for freshman orientation.  The Founder and President began the program with a welcome address and a brief history about Palm Institute.  The Student Life and Career Services Department Officer shared about opportunities for peer mentoring, internships and community service projects, job shadowing and corporate mentorship services.  The Registrar, discussed with students about the Writing and Math Center and academic counseling.  She encouraged students to utilize these available resources.    

On Saturday, students were provided with an overview of the Palm Honor System and Examination Honour Code and Palm Institute’s Sexual Harassment Policy.  They were also introduced to the Center for Ethical Leadership at Palm (CEL) and the Palm Technology & Innovation Lab (The Green Lab). The Director of International Programs, shared information about the partnership with Oklahoma State University and potential exchange and internship opportunities.   Students were also briefed on the availability of confidential counselling services as well to assist in their educational journey.

Representatives from The David Okai Okantey (DOO) Foundation, the NAPE Foundation Board in the USA and Oklahoma State University addressed the freshmen students virtually.

ADMISSIONS MEETING

In February, the Admissions Committee met to discuss strategic planning towards improving the student recruitment and admission process. Strategies include offering further weekend options for full-time workers, organizing leadership training seminars for high school students and advertising on social media, radio, television and community centers along with regional outreach opportunities.  March 2022 was proposed for the launch of the 2022 Admissions.

THE PALM GREEN LAB

As part of preparations towards the Palm Technology & Innovation Lab (The Green Lab), a virtual meeting was held with a coach focuses on design thinking, entrepreneurship & startups. The meeting introduced The Green Lab concept and how it is a helpful tool to encourage, nurture and generate entrepreneurial ideas to help solve the “wicked problems” in Ghana and on the continent of Africa.

 

TIME WITH THE PRESIDENT

The students, faculty and staff had the opportunity to meet with the president on February 14th, 2022. This time is designed to encourage discussion around questions, concerns or suggestions to enhance student and academic success and staff efficiency at Palm Institute.

 

DRESS FOR SUCCESS AND “HOW TO BE CAREER READY” SEMINARS

During the month of February, the current freshmen participated in a “Dress for Success” seminar that was facilitated by the President and Registrar. The seminar shared the importance of appearance and choosing appropriate business attire for various professional settings.

Also, consultants from Happy Valley, Oregon, USA facilitated a virtual seminar on “How to be Career Ready.” They helped students examine and identify intrinsic and extrinsic motivators and what to consider in the career exploration process.  They also encouraged students to maintain a broad view when choosing a career.

DESIGN THIKING AND ENTREPRENEURSHIP SEMINAR

On February 18th, 2022, thefaculty and staff engaged in a session on design thinking and entrepreneurship with a faculty member from Ashesi University. She shared her experiences with how design thinking and entrepreneurship has supported students from Ashesi University with their future career goals.

STAFF RESIDENCE BUILDING PROJECT

Thanks to multiples donors, Palm Institute was able to clear the area, lay the foundation and procure building materials for the staff residence building that is planned to house students in September 2022.
