This project will build a community health unit in Wakiso district central Uganda providing comprehensive health care to a community of over 71,000 in Wakiso sub-county, assisting patients with general and specialist services. Our ambulance, one of very few in the region, will respond to emergencies throughout Wakiso district, and we send doctors and leaders into isolated communities to provide care and health education. This unit will primarily target children below 12yrs and expectant mothers.
The approximately 71,000 residents of Wakiso sub-County in Wakiso district live from 10 to 20 km of Wakiso health center IV. This facility is government-run, and as such, provides medical treatment free of charge to a population in excess of 200,000 people. However, because it is the primary medical facility for several sub-counties and town councils around, it is chronically over-crowded, and insufficient inventories of medication. Equipments are inadequate to meet the needs of the patients.
St. Francis medical facility will be a non-profit, non-sectarian healthcare facility in the village of Bulaga Kalambi, Wakiso sub-county in Wakiso District. The clinic will provide primary medical care including appropriate treatment, disease testing, inoculation, medication dispensing, education and maternity services to a population of 71,000 people but most especially children below 12 years and expectant mothers.
There will be increased health service delivery to the entire 71,000 population of Wakiso sub-county through provision of medical personnel, medical equipments and support staffs. This will however increase the well being of families in the community and they will be able to participate in the meaningful economic activities essential for poverty reduction.
