Summary

The project "Consolidating Peace in the Kalehe Territory" aims to strengthen social cohesion and prevent community conflicts in Mbinga South grouping, located in the Kalehe territory, South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This area is marked by recurring tensions related to land disputes, community divisions, the impact of armed groups, and population displacement. These dynamics weaken the social fabric, limit civic participation, and hinder local development.

Challenge

Mbinga-Sud grouping, in Kalehe territory, South Kivu, Democratic Republic of the Congo, faces recurring conflicts related to land disputes, community tensions, armed groups, and the exploitation of forest resources in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. These crises weaken social cohesion and exclude women and youth from decision-making. The absence of effective local mechanisms exacerbates tensions, highlighting the urgent need to promote dialogue and awareness-raising to foster social cohesion.

Solution

The project aims to strengthen peace and social cohesion in the Mbinga South grouping by establishing sustainable local mechanisms for conflict prevention and management. It promotes inclusive dialogue, creates and strengthens peace committees, trains leaders and members in mediation and leadership, and conducts awareness campaigns on peaceful coexistence, human rights, and the protection of natural resources, in order to restore trust, reduce tensions, and support local development.

Long-Term Impact

The project will help establish lasting peace and improved social cohesion in the Mbinga South grouping. By strengthening local capacities in mediation and conflict management, and promoting inclusive dialogue, it will help prevent future tensions. The establishment of local peace committees and awareness campaigns will maintain trust among communities, include women and youth in decision-making, and create an environment conducive to sustainable socio-economic development.
