CONSERVATION AWARENESS AT TARGET VILLAGES

PROJECT TITLE:CONSERVATION OF NATIONAL BIRD ,INDIA

REPORT TITLE:CONSERVATION AWARENESS AT TARGET VILLAGES

The Global Giving Organisation and Chevalier Roche Society has joined their hands together in a project named Conservation of national bird of India. As a part of this project,the school students  of Thoothukudi  District (ottapidaaram and Kurukkusaalai)where given awareness camps about the extinction of our national bird.These villages where targeted because the death rate of peacocks where high at these villages .These camps  where headed by  Head master S.Chandran in the presence of higher grade teacher N.Jayanthi and mid school teacher Mr.Johnson.Our society project manager Mr.M.A.Dhamodran and National Green Corp (NGC)Staff  gave speech in this training.

The following particulars where taught to the students during the training programme :

1) Reason for the extincton of peacocks

* Hunted for peacock meat.

*Superstitious beliefs that peacock oil cures joint pains .

* Decorative purposes (DIY)

*Peacock feathers are collected for making peacock dress and hand fans.

* Peacocks feed on the Insecticides and Pesticides sprayed on the plants

* They come for feeding and water to city areas  and die in these accident prone areas  

The students where giving detailed explanation about these hazards faced by our national bird, and they where taught how to safeguard our nations pride.

2)Steps for safeguarding

 * Hunting peacocks is strictly forbidden ,by Indian Forest Department ,Students where educated  to tell their parents

* They where  asked to enlighten their parents about the superstitious belief of applying peacock oil that it will cure joint pains.

* Addition of chemical fertilizers to plants must be avoided .

* Scarecrows must be used to frighten these peacocks in fields , instead of poisoning them.

 

3) Exhibition regarding peacock extinction   

     An exhibition was conducted after this awareness programe . All the students and faculty members of the respective schools viewed this exhibition

*Exhibition displayed  why the peacocks where being hunted

*  The peahens and the peacock growth was exhibited

* The different varieties and species of these peacocks where exhibited

* Peacock dresses, Peacock fans and peacock feathers where kept for exhibition

* Hunted peacocks and peacock meat where didplayed .

* The beauty of these birds where also exhibited

Finally our Chevalier Roche Society co-ordinator gave the vote of thanks . This project preparation and work was done by our  faculty members. 

Awareness programmes for farmers

Target village farmers where given awareness programmes in the following places :

1) Kurukkuchallai panchayat camp office for agri farmers 

2) Pudhurpandiyapuram panchayat camp office for agri farmers
