A few days back we received a report about an abandoned dairy cow who had a large cervical prolapse. Cervical prolapses in Indian dairy cattle are extremely common and are often a consequence of poor diet. Cows produce milk for the same reason that humans do - to nourish their babies. However, calves in dairy farms are taken away from their mothers when they are just a few days old. They are fed milk replacers so that their mother’s milk can be sold to us, humans. This is a heartbreaking condition for most dairy cows but that is not it, later in life these poor babies suffer from painful medical conditions such as prolapse and many other problems.
Treating and repairing the prolapsed region is of high priority to prevent inflammation and infection from setting in. Unfortunately, Nandini’s prolapse was already inflamed, as a result, her owner left her on the road with the untreated condition. When we received her she was immediately given antibiotics and other medical assistance to reduce the inflammation. After a few days, the prolapsed mass was pushed back inside. It may sound easy, but the process is extremely difficult and painful for the poor animal. Nandini’s prolapse has not recurred and she is under constant supervision and medication by the team of our vets.
In our society milk is a necessity but producing milk should be done scientifically and in a humane manner. Depriving the babies of their mother’s milk is not the solution. We need more and more kind people who can come forward and spread awareness for the same. Our well-being will never be possible without their betterment.
