Community Workshop: Bee Keeping

On Saturday the 24^th of March, Green Care Association organised a Bee keeping workshop in Shisong village. A total of 15 persons attended, amongst which were four (4) women and one youth. Main topics treated include, Types of Bees, Colony division and function, Qualities of a good bee keeper, Benefits of Bee keeping, where to locate a Bee farm and Honey harvesting techniques.

During the workshop samples of traditional, Top Bar and Langstroth Hives were displayed for comparison.  Ideas were discussed and shared on the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of hives. .

Facilitation of the workshop was done in mother tongue, which gave many farmers the opportunity to understand more and asked meaningful question in relation to the Bee keeping. At the end of the workshop new farmers lie Mrs Sah Anna and Yekov Mary Bernadette appealed for another training opportunity, while Mr Justin Berinyuy appreciated the training and immediately requested for formation of Bee farmers Club. This was approved by the assembly and it was agreed the trained farmers shall be meeting once every last Saturday of the month to discuss issues affecting their bee keeping sector.

The training ended with a visit to Bee demonstration farm and acquisition of training handout by farmers. Four of the participants had not previously considered bee keeping but at the end of the training they were so keen they promised to start as soon as possible.
