4M refugees have already fled Ukraine to seek refuge in the neighbouring countries. Families are separated, since it's often women and children who can leave the country. Being forced to leave part of their family behind and having little information on what awaits them beyond the border puts them in a distressing situation. TSF provides them relief through free internet connectivity which helps them remain in contact with their relatives and look for essential information for their future.
Within and outside Ukraine, displaced people and refugees in transit find themselves unconnected either because they don't have access to local sim cards, they don't know how to install them, or they cannot afford them. In crisis situations, unconnected means increased insecurity. Without access to the Internet, refugees, often women and children, have less to no possibility to remain in contact with their loved ones and to find up-to-date information on how to plan their next moves.
Since February 2022, TSF has been addressing the need for connectivity and access to information on internally displaced persons in Ukraine. TSF provides Wi-Fi coverage in 14 collective centers for Internally Displaced People (IDPs) in Lviv, Vinnytsia, Dnipro, Chernivsti, Brody Tomashivka, Lisovody, Shepetivka, and Hlyboka. This connectivity allows between 150 and 250 IDPs in each center to remain in contact with their families and look for relevant information online.
Forcibly displaced Ukrainians, mainly women and children, fleeing the war in Ukraine are able to remain in contact with their relatives and find relevant information about the war, procedures and safe routes. In these situations, the psychological relief of hearing familiar voices, added to the possibility of accessing the most up-to-date information on the possible options for a safer and brighter future is essential to making informed decisions.
