Connecting Food was created to minimize the social, economic and environmental impact of food loss and waste (FLW) in Brazil, which averages around 26 million tons per year. If distributed correctly, these wasted food can potentially benefit 52 million people. The food circumstance in Brazil today can be classified under the "severe and mild food insecurity situation." By putting together technology which includes a website and an app used to connect donors and institutions, a food donation program providing skills to well established NGOs in order to expand food donation effort and an education program promoting nutritional and food processing awareness needed to reduce food waste in institutions, Connecting Food is working to create a new culture and environment to promote awareness and create a positive impact in this field.
Since the beginning of this campaign and the first version of our app, we have gathered the support and participation of three new important donors - one big retail chain, a wholesale company and an organic product company. They now use our platform to donate excessive food items to 5 NGOs. The amount of food donated in the last three months is feeding more than 600 people on a daily basis, 75% of beneficiaries are children.
With the help of Connecting Food, surplus food items will have the correct destination instead of getting wasted. Improved communication between food donors and recipients will bring more trust and transparency, opening donation awareness among big players. Moving from manual to automatic transactional management will reduce both costs and risks in this process. The greater availability and access to food for consumption will reinstall food and nutritional security in Brazil.
We would like to thank you for your help for making everything possible and contributing to potentially feeding 52 million of deprived people.
