There is a challenge for families in our community. Although primary school is free, there are required school fees that are a challenge for parents to pay. If they don't pay, their child is sent home from school. As a way to support parents, we created a beekeeping program to allow them to earn income for school fees and other family needs. Through generous support of donors like you, we have set up 6 apiaries with 86 beehives. Once the hives are colonized, they begin harvesting the honey which they sell. This program has empowered parents with new skills along with providing income to them.
Every new apiary brings new environmental conditions, new observations, and new perspectives that help us better understand bee health in real-world conditions.
Projects like this also show how technology can support education and inspire the next generation of beekeepers. This blends four of our focus areas together: in-school, empowerment, technology and pathways.
The Beekeeping Program is another example of how Kenya Connect's program connects our mission to provide children with options and new pathways. Thank you for your generous support of our programs. I hope the next time you see a bee or have some honey you think about the bees buzzing in Wamunyu and creating lucious honey!
