The compressed earth block project is designed to create affordable high quality housing that is environmentally friendly and locally sourced. The job creation potential in the manufacture of the blocks and construction of the houses themselves is enormous and has the potential to create thousands of jobs in South Africa, bringing hope and dignity to previously unemployed individuals in local communities. The blocks themselves have approved by local green building certification agencies.
South Africa has one of the highest rates of employment in the world with the unemployment rate sitting at around 40%. South Africa also has a chronic housing shortage resulting in many people living in shacks with no running water and unsafe living situations. USE-IT's compressed Earth Block project will create 1000's of jobs using material that was previously sent to landfill sites and create extremely high quality housing that will contribute to solving the housing crisis in the country.
The project will create sustainable small scale compressed earth block manufacturing and building enterprises. This will create much needed jobs within the country as well as address the housing shortage currently being experienced.
The knock on effects of creating sustainable employment opportunities for 1000's of previously unemployed individuals are enormous. The benefits of of having safe high quality housing creates a nurturing environment in any society. USE-IT is projecting that we can create 20 000 compressed earth houses over a period of 3 years, creating 1000 sustainable jobs in the process.
