Fighting for sight comes rain, shine or pandemic!

Retired but not ready to rest - Dr. Chen
Retired but not ready to rest - Dr. Chen

The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged our global mission in ways we have never seen before. Like other charities, it has affected Orbis in carrying out projects on the ground. Though the situation is getting more stable, local hospitals, including the Ningxia Eye Hospital, are still densely occupied to catch up with their own works delayed due to COVID-19.

Dr. Chen, a retired Grade 1 ophthalmologist, decided to come forward and give a helping hand to the overwhelmed hospital. Dr. Chen has been engaged in ophthalmology for 35 years, accumulated rich clinical experience in the treatment of various infectious, functional, ischemic, or hemorrhagic external or internal eye diseases and retinal diseases. After retirement, Dr. Chen did not stop his journey in optometry, but chose to volunteer in the field work of the cooperation project “Surveillance and Service on Children High Myopia'' between SEDPTC and Orbis, contributing himself to fight against Myopia for children and teenagers.

Children in the High Myopia project must undergo a range of tests such as visual acuity (naked eyes or corrected with glasses), axial length, intraocular pressure, auto-refraction with dilated pupil, subjective refraction, corrected vision, anterior segment, and fundus. Each of the tests need to be conducted by an experienced ophthalmologist. In this difficult time and shortage of manpower, Dr, Chen stepped up and volunteered for the on-site work, his contribution greatly eased the hospital’s burden.

While the pandemic is hampering Orbis’s global mission, weneed more volunteers like Dr. Chen to join hands with us to fight against preventable blindness!
