Tonali Grows: Reaching Beyond Our Own Walls

By Sofia Ibarra Shaw | Social Development Coordinator

In the last three months, the Tonali Psychopedagogical Center has done something we hoped for but weren't sure we could reach so quickly: we tripled the number of children receiving psychopedagogical assessment. Tonali — a Nahuatl word for the personal vital energy each person carries — was built to give the children at Albergue Infantil de Irapuato a clear, professional understanding of how they learn, feel, and develop, through standardized instruments including Battelle, WISC-IV, BANFE, BANETA, and Frostig. What began as a service for our own children has, in one quarter, grown into something larger.

The biggest driver of that growth is a decision to open Tonali's doors outward. This quarter we established agreements with other shelters in our city — homes that care for vulnerable children but have no psychologist or pedagogue of their own. For those children, a learning difficulty or an unmet emotional need has often gone unnamed for years, simply because no one had the tools to see it. Through these partnerships, Tonali now assesses and supports children well beyond AIDI, reaching some of the most underserved young people in Irapuato.

But growth at Tonali is not only measured in assessments — it's measured in futures. Through our life-skills and autonomy programming, we launched Chefsitos, a hands-on culinary program for the young people in our care. For some of our girls — several of whom are already young mothers — the kitchen has become more than a skill. As they cook, they have begun to see that when they turn 18 they can work in professional kitchens and support their children on their own. One of these young women was recently awarded a gastronomy-school scholarship after the program — a real path to a career that, not long ago, no one could have promised her.

None of this reach would exist without the donors who believed in Tonali at the start. Your support didn't just fund a service for one shelter — it built something now capable of finding and answering the hidden needs of children across the city, and of opening doors to futures these young people can build for themselves. That is what tripling our impact really means.
