Impact Report on Adolescent Maternity

By Morella Weiser | Project Leader

Reporting Period: April – June 2025

Target Demographic: Pregnant adolescents aged 15–19

Program Overview & Holistic Support

During this quarter, 12 young pregnant teenagers received comprehensive, multi-dimensional support designed to safeguard their health and empower their futures. The initiative provided a holistic care package, including:

  • Medical & Nutritional Support: Provision of essential prenatal medical care, vital medicines, vitamins, and targeted nutritional assistance.
  • Infant Essentials: Distribution of milk and baby clothes.
  • Psychosocial Guidance: Dedicated counseling to protect, support, and empower both the young mothers and their babies.

Demographic & Socio-Economic Profile

The participants face complex educational and economic challenges, particularly those relocating from vulnerable rural areas.

  • Age Range: 15 to 19 years old.
  • Pregnancy Status: One baby was successfully delivered in May 2025; the remaining participants are currently between 3 and 7 months pregnant.
  • Educational Status:
    • 2 mothers are currently completing 6th grade.
    • 3 mothers are in their final years of high school.
    • The remaining participants have dropped out of school.
  • Nutritional Challenges: Due to severe socio-economic poverty, a majority of the girls exhibit signs of malnutrition. This vulnerability is most acute among teenagers originating from rural sectors, including Caicaguana, Sisipa, Gavilán, and Turgua.

Capacity Building & Delivery Preparation

To ensure long-term stability and safe transitions into motherhood, the program focuses heavily on education and healthcare coordination:

  • Maternal Education: Participants receive specialized instruction in prenatal and childbirth care, infant care, self-esteem building, and family orientation.
  • Healthcare Integration: Upon reaching full term, mothers are referred to local hospitals with a comprehensive medical report to facilitate seamless, high-quality care during delivery.
  • Livelihood & Entrepreneurship Training: To encourage financial independence and improve living conditions, the mothers are invited to participate in technical trade workshops. Training tracks include pastry-making, manicuring, and hairdressing, equipping them with the tools to generate an income.

Key Observations & Future Outlook

Despite facing extraordinarily difficult socio-economic circumstances, the participants have shown significant personal progress.

The program has observed a marked increase in the girls' sense of responsibility, deep attachment to their babies, motivation for self-improvement, and the formulation of concrete life plans. Moving forward, continued and robust support remains critical to help these young families thrive and prevent the recurrence of high-risk situations.
