As the COVID 19 pandemic continues to expand, the impacts have been felt by different population groups especially the vulnerable groups like the tribal communities as they are dependent on daily wages for their livelihood.
Families from this community faced loss of work and no pay due to the extended lockdowns which left them with no access to any resources for their survival. Moreover, the landfall of Cyclone Nisarg in the Raigad District further pushed these families into poverty leaving their households devastated. Even though the government has announced supplies at subsidized rates but the quantity is not sufficient as per the requirement of the entire family and provided only to those who have eligible documents.
To help address and support the challenges faced by these vulnerable children and their families, The PRIDE India has crafted its intervention programmes by providing these vulnerable children with continued educational support and also provided their families with livelihood support and the support of food grain and hygiene materials to ensure that they remain safe indoors and do not become victims of hunger and malnutrition.
1) 54 children were contacted through their parents’ mobile phones with new concepts being taught to them over the call. The children who did not have access to mobile phones shared phones from the children neighbourhood.
2) 51 women were provided vegetable seeds as livelihood agricultural support.
3) All the 70 children and families were provided with food grain and hygiene kit consisting of cereals, lentils, oil, basic spices, sugar salt, tea and soaps. Each of these vulnerable families comprises of 5-6 members who were supported for two months with the support.
These tribal vulnerable families were happy and grateful to receive such support as it has helped their children receive continued education and has also helped their families survive through this pandemic.
